Evolution of speech recogniton

Why type? –  speech is faster!

I found an interesting Infographic a few days ago which I would like to share to you. This one is one year old, but as we look at history of speech recognition – nothing has changed.

History

Here, you can see that the technology of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) has developed a lot since the Voder from AT&T in 1936. Today, we use Apple’s SIRI and there are actually some more solutions from Google and Microsoft and for sure, Nuance has done some great new stuff.

  10. Detlev, this is a great post. Just in the past couple of years I find myself using speech recognition more and more. I especially like using it on the iPhone when I’m composing a text message or quick email on the run. You can accomplish so much without typing at all.

In the early days of the Mac (Power PC era) you could ask the Mac what time it was, or to open a document or print, etc., and it was very cool (It also talked back).

Google voice search is absolutely amazing. And the MotoX has some amazing abilities, too!

I wonder if eventually voice recognition will have built-in grammar, spelling and punctuation?
